Spanish
Spanish is one of the most widespread and most commonly used languages around the world today. With over 400 million speakers, Spanish is the official language of numerous countries in four different continents and the second most used language in the world. Did you know that most English words come from Latin roots? Being a Latin language itself, learning Spanish can help you learn much more about English as well. With its structural and phonetic similarities to other languages, learning Spanish makes learning other languages such as Spanish, French, German, Italian, Russian, or even Japanese easier. In addition, from a native English speaker's perspective Spanish is relatively easy to learn. According to the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) in the US Department of State, Spanish is considered Category 1 on the language difficulty scale which is the lowest level.
Chinese (Mandarin)
With China's incredible population and influence in South East Asia over 873 million people speak Chinese making it the number one used language in the world. In addition to China and Taiwan, the use of Chinese is evident in neighboring countries such as Singapore, Philippines, Mongolia, Thailand, and Malaysia. With China becoming the second largest economic power in the world, you can expect business relations between the US and China to increase over the next couple of decades making learning Chinese beneficial towards finding jobs. Not into business and prefer traveling? China is home to one of the oldest civilizations and has an extremely rich culture that will fascinate any traveler. Although Chinese is rated as a Category III language by the FSI, do not be fooled. Aside from the writing system and pronunciation that may frighten away English speakers, the grammar is actually easier than most other languages. Unlike English, Spanish, or Japanese, Chinese has no verb conjugation, number distinctions, or gender based words. What's more, the sentence structure of S-O-V is exactly the same as English.
French
French is arguably one of the most romantic languages in the world. Some famous tourist locations where you may find yourself speaking French include: Switzerland, Quebec, Belgium, and of course France. From food to fashion, French is a culturally important language. French is similar to a several other languages such as Spanish, Romanian, Italian, Portuguese, and English. In fact, the English language contains several hundred thousand words that are originally French. Like Spanish, French also is a Category I language and therefore relatively easy to pick up.
Arabic
The Middle East is the birthplace of some of the most highly influential monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. It is also home to almost two thirds of the world’s oil reserve. Currently there has been an increasing demand for those knowledgeable of the Arabic language in the West due to the growing importance of the Middle East in international affairs. Since demand of Arabic speakers is high and the supply is low, those who study Arabic may easily find occupations in a variety of fields from journalism to Foreign Service and intelligence.
Russian
Russian ranks 5th of the list of languages spoken by the most people with a population of over 270 million. The country expands over two continents and is roughly twice the size of either America or China. Although Russian isn’t one of the easiest languages to learn it isn’t the most difficult. In fact, though the Russian alphabet may seem intimidating at first majority of the 33 letters are borrowed from the English language. Once you have mastered Cyrillic, as it is called, you will soon realize spelling in Cyrillic makes more sense than English spelling.
